SIXTY-SECOND SHOW
ASHBURTON A & P ASSOCIATION WIDE RANGE OF HIGH QUALITY EXHIBITS VERY ATTRACTIVE DISPLAY TO-DAY
With a very full catalogue of no fewer than 2450 entries the Ashburton Agricultural and Pastoral Association s sixty-second annual exhibition of live stock, farm and dairy produce and school and domestic crafts was held on the Ashburton Showgrounds today and it attracted a good deal of attention on the part of residents of both town and country. The wide range of exhibits m all sections of the Sjiow made the fixture one of the most attractive the Association Jias staged and this fact was appreciated by patrons. The Ashburton Show has always been looked on as a place where town and country may meet on a common ground, as the interests of both sections are so closely allied, one being dependent on the other, that it is an essential that they should combine in one big function that has its social side as well as its utility aspect. There is much to interest and educate the man from the country, while the town dweller is also able to widen his view of the industries that are an essential to the well-being of the district. For both sections there is tha,t phase of the Show which draws young and old, the amusement alley. ,
The Association has a proud record in all its activities, and in the last year it has fully lived up ’to the reputation it has built up during the 61 years of its existence. Its catalogues have always been large and it says much for the organisation of the Show that the Association is able to deal easily in one day with 2450 entries where other organisations with fewer entries occupy two days. Quality this, year is again the keynote of the fixture.
The day dawned bright and clear after a very unpromising day yesterday, and though clouds piled up at times to-day the sun had the mastery most of the time and conditions were pleasantly warm. The attendance was large, all roads in the afternoon leading to the Showgrounds, and there w'as a very strong representation of town people among the patrons. There has been a considerable need over the last few years for a programme of improvements on the grounds, and by means of the queen carnival held a year, ago the Association raised a large sum of money to carry out necessary work. Buildings have been altered, renovated and painteel and railings and stock pens have been repaired and extended, while some of the older buildings have been removed, the result being a much brighter showground. New Entrance In Use. The new entrance from the Main South Hoad was used to-day for the first time. Gate 9 costing £6O were placed in position' some time ago arid the new entrance proved to be worthwhile with numerous people who attended the show. The wooden gates, which are about 15 feet wide, are swung from large brick pillars from which tun curved brick barriers flanking off to short stretches of picket fence. The drive has been freshly shingled, and with the line of young trees on either side, presents an attractive appearance from the main road. The whole work was done at a cost of over £IOO. The new entrance was open only to pedestrian traffic, and taxis to-day, as a system of traffic control has not yet been devised. The Sub-Committees. The organisation of the show is not left to the last few weeks. Throughout the year, the Association works on its schedule, deleting here, adding there, altering somewhere else, always modernising the classes and following the trend that will produce the best results. Sub-committees put in a. good deal of work on the schedule, taking note of the lessons that each show teaches, and so the show is kept up-to-date in all its branches. These sub-committees are as follow, the president and the vice-president (Mr J. Lowery) being ex-officio members of each:—
The president was to-day the recipient of many compliments in regard to the show, in the interests of which he has worked so willingly since he took office.
Of the organisation of the fixture, it can be said that nothing, so far as could he seen, had been left undone in the effort to make the day a success, and for this the thanks of patrons, exhibitors and the Association are due to the secretary (Mr W. H. Amos) who had everything running along in the smooth manner which, has become a custom. tChampionship Awards, • The following championships had been awarded up to the time the ‘‘Guardian” went to press: Adams Cup, entire draught A.
