WOMEN’S INSTITUTE.
ACTIVITIES IN ASHBURTON. At the monthly meeting of the Ashburton District Women’s Institute, the president (Mrs D. A. Morgan) presided over a good attendance. The meeting commenced with the Institute Song. A letter was received from the Town Clerk asking for subscriptions for tba Chinese Orphans’ Fund. A collection was taken and a gratifying sum wa? received. Information was received with reference to the Women’s Institute trip to England for the conference of Associated Country Women of the World in. June 1939.
A comprehensive report on the recent half-yearly Mid-Canterbury Fed.eration meeting at Methvien wias presented hv the delegate, Mrs Dickons. The secretary gave a. report on the placing of the hay in the bay competition at the recent show. The treasurer, Mrs Fitzgerald, was welcomed back from her recent holiday trip to Australia. An interesting and instructive lecture on loose-cover making was given by Miss Ray Robins, the A.C.E. tutor, who was accorded a 'hearty rote of thanks.
Competitions (vinners were:—Nut loaf, Mrs W. Sod cole 1 ; organdi work, Mrs M. Cooke 1; specimen truss, Mrs - Amos 1 ; specimen bloom, Mrs Sodcol o 1.
The hostesses were Miesdames Johnson, Joyce, Kelly, Loftus, Least, Marshall, Mclnnes, Saunders and With ell.
