FALSE PRETENCES.

GUILTY ON EIGHT CHARGES. REMANDED FOR SENTENCE. > (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND 1 , October 26. Eight charges of obtaining money by false pretences were preferred against Frederick Joseph Huddleston, a clerk, aged 30 (Mr Noble), before Mr Justice Callan in the Supreme Court. It was alleged that accused obtained a total of £4O by falsely representing that he was training men for employment with a refrigeration (company, and that he could guarantee the men employment with the company, provided they undertook a course of tuition with him at a cost oi £2O. The offences wene alleged, to have occurred between March 17 and May 24, 1938. Mr V. It. Meredith appeared for the Crown. In referring to transactions between the accused' and V illiam George Robert Craig, a labourer, of Auckland, Mr Meredith said that Craig got into touch with the accused through a newspaper advertisement. Accused gave Craig to understand that he represented New Zealand Air Conditioners, Ltd,., that tile company was looking for young men, and that it was putting up factories .throughout New Zealand, and had commenced one in Hamilton. Craig was promised a job, provided he undertook a course of training under the accused, at a cost of £2O. Craig paid amounts of 10s and £9 10s, but was given only sketchy tuition. He was given an algebra paper which, on completion, lie forwarded to-the address provided, but he received mo repry. Mr Meredith outlined similar transactions between accused and Jack Hanham, a motor mechanic, Arthur Cyril Hilliam, a.shop assistant,., and Peter Allard, a labourer. Mr Noble,'who offered no evidence, submitted that accused had made, no false statements whatever. Accused had been unable to fulfil his promises, ior to start his business and gh-e employment to the young men concerned because he was arilested and put into prison. . - r ...e Tho jury brought in a:verdict of guilty on, all counts.
