MID-CANTERBURY SEAT. ■ CANDIDATES' SPEECHES. 511! HERRING AT I.KESTON. Mr 11. E. Herring (the Labour candidate) addressed a good audience at Leeston last evening qnd at the conclusion received 0 vote of thanks for his address, moved by Mr J. W. McMahon and Mr W. R. Fraser. It was carried by acclamation, and three cheers were given lor Mr Herring. Air B. Brown presided. MR GRIGG SPEAKS AT METHVEN. b Mr Arthur N. Grigg, National candidate for Mid-Canterbury, addressed a crowded audience in the Methven Hall last evening, when growing enthusiasm was shown. Mr IL J. S. TVilson presided, and the candidate’s address was followed wittli close attention. A number of questions were satisfactorily answered .
On the motion of Messrs J. TV. M. Dart and J. Carr, a vote of thanks to the candidate was carried with musical honours, and the meeting concluded with the singing of the National Anthem. NATIONAL GARDEN PARTY. There was an attendance of about 150 at a most enjoyable garden party attended by supporters’ of the National Party at the residence of Dr. G. I. Miller. The stall on the ground did very brisk business. Croquet competitions were won by Mrs TV. R. Ry burn and Miss F. Barrett. while clock golf matches were won by" Mrs. J. Sinclair and Mr A. A. McDonald. ' NATIONAL PARTY DANCE. -One of the most enjoyable and successful balls of the season was held in the Lauriston Memorial Had when the women’s committee of the Lauriston and, Winchmdre branches combined, and the funds of the National Party will benefit considerably. A large and enthusiastic committee with Mesdames J. Bland (Winch,more) and R. Bebbington (Lauriston) as joint presidents, and Miss G. Shearer (Winch - more) and E. Lemon; (Lauriston) joint secretaries were in charge of the arrangements. The hall was tastefully decorated with coloured streamers and the windows were gay with festoons of tulips and poppies, and on the stage were large bowls of flowers and, foliage.
Cook’s Orchestra played spirited music with extras by My J. Shearer (violin) and Mr J. Cretney. Messrs H. T. Crothers and J. Bland, jun., were M.C’s.
The following contributed items: Duets: Mr and Mrs Allister Oakley; songs, Mrs T. ’A. Robinson, Mrs Alhster Oakley, Miss Shelagh Lambie, Miss Bernice Maidens, Mr Stephen Curd and Mr Alister Oakley. Tbie accompanists were Airs Oakley, Miss Dorothy Maidens and Air Philip Curd. ‘ Prizes for novelty dances were won by Aliss Dwyer and Air G. Gimson (lucky spot) and Mrs S. G. Lemon and Mr J. Bland (Monte Carlo). Airs Bebbington thanked all those who bad helped to make the evening such a success. Others speakers were ATy J. G. Marshal (chairman of the Lauriston branch of the National Party) and Air A. A. McDonald (Ashburton) president of the Mid-Canter-bury Executive-
MR BURNETT AT MOUNT SOMERS. At Mount Somers on Friday evening Mr T. B'. Burnett addressed a large and enthusiastic audience on the lines of his previous speeches. Mr Burnett emphasised tho likelihood of the Government, if returned to power, taking away from the farmers the country quota. He also pointed out how taxation was crippling those engaged in our primary industries.
A motion of thanks and confidence, moved by Mr H. Hood and seconded by Mr L. H. Ruddock, was carried unanimously. ' Colonel 11. B. Neill presided.
