The Territorials.—With a view to giving the local Territorials and Senior Cadets some outdOoi* practical work, a scheme was drawn up by Major A. J. Childs and carried into effect last night by the members'of the. C. and H. Companies, Nos. 35 and 30, Senior Cadets. The general ideh . was. that a force (red) had landed at Timaru, and instructions, received stated that the advancing force had arrived at Winslow. The above-mentioned: companies were at once detailed as a part ol a larger j force to delay and, if possible, to prevent the advance further than Ashburtom Promptly at 7t3CLp.m. tho advance guard, consisting of the right half of H Company, moved off from the drill-shed in order to secure adequate protection to the main body, which followed a few minutes later. On arrival at the far end of the Butts bridge, reconnoitring patrols wore sent out in order to see that no scouts of the supposed enemy had ’reached that far north. The companies (the officers in command having already received written instructions) ■at once threw out sentry groups, and took up positions which, in their opinion, would prevent an enemy getting through without the knowledge of the defenders. Tlie area allotted to the local forces had a frontage of about 800 yards, tlie left flank of which was the shepherd’s hut near the 700 yards shooting mound, while the right flank was the mound by the rifle butts.'
