THE CANDIDATES

TOTAL OF 177 NOMINATED. TWO MAIN POLITICAL PARTIES. TWENTY-ONE INDEPENDENTS. With the closing of nominations of candidates for the general election to be held on Saturday, October 15, the campaign strengths of the two main parties are determined. Labour will*go to the polls with 78 candidates of whom 54 are sitting members, the only member of the present Government who is not seeking reelection being Mr A. Campbell (Chalmers), whose constituency has disappeared as the result of boundary changes. The party is not contesting two electorates, Nelson and Mataura, held respectively by Mr H. Atmore and Mr ID. McDougall, Independents, who are apparently regarded bv the Government as its supporters on policy matters. . \ %

Nationalists and Independents. Seventy-six National candidates and one Independent National candidate have been selected. This leaves only three electorates—r-Egmont, Wellington North and Wellington West—without candidates. The sitting member for Egmont, Mr C. A. Wilkinson (Independent) is a former member of the party, as is also Mr It. A. Wright (Independent) member for Wellington Suburbs, who is contesting the new Wellington West seat. In the Wellington North electorate another Independent candidate, Mrs Knox Gilmer, a daughter of the late Riclwd John Seddon, has been nominated and is not opposed by the Nationalists. Other Candidates. In addition to the 155 Labour and National candidates announced, there are 22 other candidates for 19 electorates. One is a Country Party member and the others are Independent, or Independents, Labour candidates. The total is thus 177. At the 1935 election there were 251 candidates. The affiliations of all candidates, compared with the party representation at the 1935 elections are: —
