ON POLLING DAY.
THE HALF HOLIDAY QUESTION. • - FEW PREMISES AFFECTED. Because of the unusual circumstances arising from the selection of a Saturday as polling day in the General Election, the question of the closing of shops at noon on that day does not so greatly concern the business community in Ashburton County, where all districts observe Saturday as the weekly half-day. The Electoral Act, 1927, lays it down that the half holiday in the week in which polling day falls shall be observed on polling day, but for this election, the' ordinary closing of shops will be observed, except in those cases where there are special conditions. In the case of those shops which arc not required to observe a statutory closing-day, namely, fishmongers, fruiterers, confectioners, florists, dairy produce sellers, bakers, etc. (vide section 21 (a) of the Act as amended by section 10 (a) of the 1927 Amendment Act) the assistants must be given their half-holiday, on polling-day. This has been pointed out . by the officer in charge of the Department of Labour at Christchurch in a letter to the “Guardian.”
