Always, week in week out, girls are being prepared for their first Communion, which they make in white frocks—in Roman Catholic churches the carliest age is seven; in the English church, 14. In church families, this first Communion is a big moment in the family history. In France, are other European countries, where the ceremony of Confirmation is part and parcel of national life, great preparations are made, and the 'turn out” of the small girls is given much consideration. The accompanying sketches, made from sonic pictures which appeared in a current French production, show some charming styles for Communion, carried out in batiste, sheer linen, or muslin. Embroidery edged with Valencienncs trills is used as trimming for the little white muslin gown on the extreme left. The tiny cap is banded similarly. Next is a dear little shirtma of muslin, with tiny lace edging of cuffs and collar with loops of bows made of spotted organdi round the skirt, and a plait and bows s the bonnet. Semi-circles of muslin frilling adorn the third frock, and the cap carries a narrow flat self bow. A wide goffered frill wish de at throat and waist is admirably suitable for an older girl, as is the demure little frock at the extreme right with double bands down the front. The blouse has shoulder yokes, and collar, front and cuffs are edged with a frilling of Valenciennes lace.
