BRITAIN’S PRECAUTIONS. THE DISTRIBUTION OF FOOD. PLANS TO EVACUATE LONDON. (United Pres 9 Association —Copyright.; (Received This Day, 12.30 p.m.) LONDON, September 29. The Parliamentary Committee of the National Federation of Grocers and Provision Dealers’ Associations resolved to place the whole machinery of their organisation at the disposal of the Government to assist an even distribution of essential foods. This is one outcome of the activities of the Food Defence Department ol' the Board of Trade.
As part of the further precautionary measures, it is announced that those engaged in the supply and distribution of feeding stuffs for animals have agreed to maintain prices' at their present levels for a fortnight. Plans for the evacuation, in the event of war, of London schoolchildren and all adults who may wish to leave, include compulsory billeting on households in the country areas within a 30 and GO miles radius of London. The Government has issued an appeal. for strict economy in the use of supplies of petrol. The anti-aircraft, Army and Royal Air Force recruiting campaign, and the mobilising of the Meet are continuing at full speed. Municipalities have been advised in no circumstances to delay the air raid precautions. German visitors continue to call at the Embassy for visas. NEW ZEALAND VOLUNTEERS. OFFERS RECEIVED BY MINISTER. DUNEDIN, September 29. Offers for active service in the event of the British Empire being involved in war have been received in considerable numbers by the Minister for Defence (the Hon. F. Jones) during the last few days. In some cases the men offering their services are returned soldiers who served in the Great War, but there have also been offers by younger men who wish to serve their country. A - communication has been received from a woman, who expressed her willingness to serve in any capacity in which she may be required. RETURNED MEN VOLUNTEER. AUCKLAND, September 29. In response to an announcement that, the Dominion Returned Soldiers’ Association had undertaken to he responsible for providing men from its ranks for searchlight and equipment services at the ports of Auckland and Wellington, more than 50 returned soldiers have offered their services at the Auckland Returned Soldiers’ Association headquarters. The men will be organised for duty at this port.
