FISHING SEASON

LIBERATION OF FRY. ASHBURTON RIVER WELL STOCKED. TROUT OVA FROM SOUTH CANTERBURY. Over 350,000 fry have been liberated in the" Ashburton River so far this season and the results have been excellent, according to the report or the Ashburton Acclimatisation Society’s ranger (Mr D. McDougall). The Society met last evening, the .chairman t(Mr A. J. Millichamp) presiding. There were still 110,000 ova which would he hatching at an early date, continued the report. The season at the hatchery had been the most successful since its inception. The secretary (Mr J. B. Nicoli) stated that he had advised the North Canterbury Society that owing to the rainbow traps at Lake Heron ueing washed out through flooding, it had been impossible to secure any ,rainbow ova, and that the Society would therefore be unable to donate any ova this season to the North 'Canterbury branch. As it has been difficult to obtain rainbow trout ova in this district to date the South Canterbury Acclimatisation Society has offered to supply 30,000 fry in appreciation of the xict that a. great number of anglers from the south fish the Ashburton lakes during the season. The try will be liberated in Lake Camp. Mr W. J. Roy was appointed honorary caretaker at the Rokaia reserve, and Mr I). Smith honorary caretaker at the Rangitata reserve. Mr W. Cameron was appointed caretaker for the season at Hakatere. The season will open next Saturday morning.
