WAR EXPECTED.

OPINION IN UNITED STATES. NO DOUBT AS TO BLAME. WASHINGTON, September 27.' The stiffening attitude of the Czechs —particularly the reference in Dr. Benes’ reply to Mr Roosevelt that “the Czechoslovakian nation would defend itself if attacked,” and the semi-official statement in London that armed attack on Czechoslovakia would result in French, British and Russian support for the former—leaves American observers convinced that war is now inevitable. The impact of this belief can be said to have struck the entire Western Hemisphere. It is reflected, for instance, in the cablegrams sent to Herr Hitler and Dr. Benes by the President of Argentina (Dr. Ortiz), making a last-moment appeal tor them to settle the dispute pacifically. If Americans are now convinced that war is inevitable, it can also be said definitely that there is no doubt where the blame properly falls. The New York “Sun,” in a leading article, begs Americans to refrain from rash criticisms and dangerous generalisations which may increase resentments. It adds: “If the worst should happen—if Europe should be precipitated to the abyss, the blame must lie allocated by history on tho record as it stands.” MR ROOSEVELT’S MESSAGE. DEFINITE WEIGHT FOR PEACE, PARTS, September 2G. Official circles welcome President Boosevelt’s message as throwing more definite weight for peace.
