DEFENCE MUST COME FIRST. PRIME MINISTER AND THE ELECTIONS. WELLINGTON, This Day. The possibility of his not being able to leave Wellington for election purposes in view of the European situation was mentioned by the Prime Minister (the lit. Hon. M. J. Savage) in an interview. “I will carry out the arrangements, of course, if things do not become any worse, but I have to be prepared lor not being able to get away,” he said. “3! don’t want anybody to get the wind up, because everyone will hope that something good will come out of the discussions between Mr Chamberlain and Herr Hitler, but it is not encouraging, to say the least. If things get any Averse, it may be that I will bo tied to Wellington for the whole of the election campaign. “I regret that possibility just as much as the people I have arranged to speak to will regret it, but, after all is said and done, the part Ave can play in Avar activities, if the Avorst comes to the Avorst, must come first. I Avill get out as much as I can, but I am not going to neglect my responsibilities to the defence of this country unnecessarily. “I cannot afford to underestimate the seriousness of the part I will be expected to play.” INDIA’S OFFER OF AID. OFFER OF TWENTY-TWO RULERS. (Received This Day, 12.20 p.m.) SIMLA, Sept. 23. Eight more Indian Rulers have offered their services to the King-Em-peror in the ev'cnt of war. This will bring tho total offers of aid to 22.
