SAFETY GLASS.
COMPULSORY USE FAVOURED. (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, September 23. The compulsory use of safety glass in the windscreens of all new motor-cars coming into or being assembled in the Dominion is favoured by the South Island Motor Union. At its annual meeting to-day the Union decided to advise the Commissioner of Transport, who is considering legislation to bring this about, of its views on the subject. The Commissioner (Mr T. G. L. Laurenson) said in a letter that it appeared the position called for definite legislation making the use of,safety glass compulsory on all motor vehicles assembled in or imported into New Zealand. By making this requirement apply lo all new vehicles the position would automatically clear itself with the minimum of hardship. If it was decided to embrace this in a regulation, a reasonable time would be granted before it became effective, so that overseas manufacturers could be advised of the position. It might also be desirable, added Mr Laurenson, lo make it an offence to replace a broken windscreen in any motor vehicle with plateglass.
