BOXING
DOMINION CHAMPIONSHIPS. LOCAL ACTIVITIES (By “Ringside.”) * In these notes recently reference was made to the numbers smoking in the hall at the last tournament. In fairness to the fireman and police in attendance it is pointed out that the brigadesmen and constable on duty were most diligent in their efforts to stop the smoking. It is proposed to. hold an Empire title boxing contest in Wellington during the centennial celebrations in 1910. A strong effort is to be made to have the New Zealand championships held at Ashburton next year. A splendid night at the Stadium on Saturday and it was a good idea to give the hoys a semi-public work-out before leaving for Gisborne. All except P. Connolly were seen in action and all were -impressed with the fitness and skill of the Ashburton contingent for the North. R. Smith and R. Tonks showed to particularly good advantage and the same can be said of C. McCandish. Tom Lister will extend all challengers and he should come hack full of laurels. The work of F. Hill will bo watched with great interest for shrewd heads judge that lie will go far in the , fistio game. On Saturday night Ron Withell acted as sparring partner and he looked as though he is quickly regaining the form lie lost through a series of misfortunes in the early part of the season. He may he seen in action again at the next local tournament. All roads lead to Rakaia to-night when a splendid programme of amateurs has been arranged. The time is quickly coming when the Rakaia Association, through its popularity, will have to look for a larger hall to accommodate the crowds that invariably turn up to the tournaments at the riverside town. More than likely the local boxers will travel to Gisborne by motor cars, negotiations now being in train to bring this about. Bill Cunliffe’s school visits the Tuarangi Homo this evening when those in the home will he entertained with a series of wrestling bouts. Boxing Title. The Syklney boxing promoter Mr Charles Lucas announced recently that Small Montana former fly-weight champion of the world, had signed to meet Mickey Miller in Australia in November or December. He also stated that the National Boxing Association would shortly indicate an opponent to fight Montana in Australia for the world flyweight championship on a date to be fixed later. Benny Lynch, of Scotland, was the most recent holder of the flyweight title, which was declared vacant when Lynch over-weighed in his fight in Glasgow, on June 29, with Jackie Jurich, of America, whom he knocked out. Montana is a Filipino, aged 25. Miller is bantam-weight and featherweight champion of Australia.
