OBITUARY.
MR JOSEPH SCALES. An old and respected resident of the Ashburton County, Mr Joseph Scales died at his residence “The Lodge, 125 Cameron Street last evening,* at the age of 86. Mr Scales was born at Graby, Lincolnshire, the son of Mr and Mrs Joseph Scales. Having received his education at a grammar school in Northampton, Mr Scales came to New Zealand in 1876. He settled in Southland where he took up farming on his own account near Riverton. He later moved to iPrebbleton, after managing a farm at Christchurch for Mr Acton-Adams. While in Christchurch, in 1885 he married Miss Barbara Edwards. For 20 years Mr Scales fanned at Prebbleton, moving then to Dunsandel. After residing there tor two years he took a farm at Maroiian. After several years there lie moved to Ashburton taking over the lease of the Somerset Hotel for 10 years. He retired some years ago. Mr Scales was actively interested in tho Anglican Church at all centres in which lie lived. He was a warden at All Saints’ ffiurch, Prebbleton. which lie represented at the Christchurch' 'Synod, and was a warden at Dunsandel, Hinds, Ashburton, and Tinwakk Mr Seales was fond of horses 'and started hunting at the age ol 12 years with the Duke of Rutland’s hounds. On several occasions he hunted in England with the then Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII. Mr Scales is survived by liis wife, two daughters, Mrs R. B. M illiams and Miss W. Seales (Ashburton), and four sons, Messrs H. Scales (W liakataki), Graham Scales (Maronan), J. Y. Scales (Kaikouva), and J. V. Scales (Riccarton).
