RANKS DIVIDED.
GOVERNMENT PARTY IN BRITAIN
UNEASINESS ON SPANISH
ISSUE.
(United Press Association —Copyright •> LONDON, June 24. . The Australian Associated Press states that the Government’s majority last evening on the Spanish issue was one of the smallest on a major issue in the life of the present Parliament. The division lists reveal many Conservative abstentions, and uneasiness is spreading throughout the Government ranks because of the ceaseless bombing of British ships. Government members have no desire to harass the Prime Minister (Mr Neville Chamberlain), but they are divided into two camps. One accepts Mr Chamberlain’s policy that intervention would mean war, and consoles itself with the reassurance that ships enter Spanish ports at their own risk, the owners and crews earning large .profits. _ . . Tho other camp is deeply .distressed, anxious for Mr Chamberlain to restore British prestige and to-.-dis-. cover an effective counter without risking war.
