NEW DIRECTOR.

INTERNATIONAL LABOUR. GENEVA, Juno 5. An American, Air John G. AY inant, has been elected director of the International Labour Office., in succession to Mr Harold Butler. It is reported that his election was partly due to the personal intervention of President Roosevelt, who intimated that he strongly desired that Mr AVinant should be given the post.

Air AVinant, who is 49 years old, was Governor of New Hampshire in 192526 and 1931-32. He was assistantdirector of the International Labour Office at Geneva in 1935, and became chairman of the Social Security Board in the United States later in the same vear.
