LACK OF LOGIC
POLITICAL SITUATION IN EIRE. CHAMPION OF BRITAIN. DE VALERA’S INVOLUNTARY ROLE. (United Pi ess Association —Copyright.) (Received This Dnv, 9.50 a.m.) LONDON, May 31. The Dublin correspondent of “The Tames’' says that the complete lack of logic seemingly governing Irish politics is aptly illustrated in the situation leading up to the elections. It seems that those wishing to retain Eire’s connection with the Empire have to vote for Mr de Valera, who was formerly regarded as a “Seagreen Incorruptible” of Republicanism, and against Mr Cosgrave, who, during his term of office, achieved a high reputation as a Commonwealth statesman. Although Mr de Valera is clearly modernising the defence posts solely in the interests of Eire, Mr Cosgrave’s supporters are attacking Mr de Valera on the ground that he is making Eire a British outpost. This incredible turn of the political wheel has resulted in Mr de Valera facing the electorate as an involuntary champion of the British.
