(From Our Own Correspondents.) LAURISTON. THE FARMERS’ UNION. Mr V. Wilkinson presided at tlie annual meeting of the Lauriston branch of the Newi Zealand, Farmers’ Union. Motions of sympathy with Mr ,T. Clinton and Mr and Mrs W. R. Hammond, were carried. The president reviewed the last year’s activities. With a membership of CO, the branch had performed some good and far-reaching work. The election; of officers resulted President, Mr V. Wilkinson; vice-pre-sident, Mr C. Hilgendorf; secretary, Mr W. Penney; treasurer, Mr F. Franks; correspondent, Mr C. A. Fyfe; delegates to Mid-Canterbury executive, Messrs G. A. Franks, W. Penney, C. Hilgendorf, and, C. A. Fyfe.
The financial statement showed that the position of the branch was very sound.
The following remit was carried for presentation to the Mid-Canterbury Executive: “As Mr Cockayne, of the Department of Agriculture, is proceeding to England to investigate the marketing of New Zealand meat, we consider his visit an opportunity for the grading of second grade lamb to be investigated, with the view of making two classes of this grading.”
WILLOWBY. METHODIST LADIES’ GUILD. The annual social, afternoon of the Methodist Circuit Ladies’ Guild was held in the Church Hall on Wednesday afternoon. The president (Mrs AY. AY. Avery) presided and conducted the opening devotional exercises. In extending a welcome to members and friends from various parts cf the circuit Mrs Avery spoke of the activities of the Guild during the year. The bring and buy table did good business under the direction of Mrs L. Stoddart and Mrs E. J. Lattimorc. Mrs Griffiths, Mrs Roberts and Mrs F. Chapman presided over the afternoon tea. The programme was as follows: — Solo, “Praise the Lord with Delight,” Mrs E. Roberts; reading, “The Doctor,” Mrs Fred Chapman; duet, “AVhere My Caravan Has Rested,” Misses M. M. and Hazel Lill; solo, “Husheen,” Mrs R. J. Chapman; solo, “Little Boy Blue,” Miss Palmer; pianoforte soles, “Arabesque” (Debussy) and “Alt AA T ein” (Codowsky), Miss Marjorie McKeage; elocutionary items, “The Vigil,” and “A Way Out Of It,” Mrs S. H. Lill. Mrs S. H. Lill was accompanist and Miss Marjorie Lill pianist for the opening and closing exercises. WINSLOW. EUCHRE TOURNAMENT. The second fortnightly social evening was held in the Winslow School.. There was a good attendance and an enjoyable time was spent in the playing of progressive euchre, followed by a dance. Tlie prize-winners were: Mr L. Scott and Mrs llae Bell; Mr Inder and Mrs Stanton were awarded consolation prizes.
