GRANT FROM COUNTY.
THE ASHBURTON SILVER BAND. A deputation comprising Sir William Nosworthy, and Messrs G. 1). H. Hefford and J. Shaw, representing the Citizens’ Committee of the Ashburton Silver Band, waited on the County Council this afternoon requesting that an annual grant should be made to the Band’s funds. Sir William Nosworthy said the deputation had waited on the Council a year ago, when a splendid grant was made on behalf of the instrument fund and the request was that the grant should be made each year. The (Band had reached a high standard of efliciency and was the champion B grade band in the Dominion. The request for a grant was made with the object of further stabilising, the revenue of the Band, which had always been willing to take part in local functions ana aid any cause it was asked to help. It took about £350 a year to maintain the Band efficiently. These sentiments were endorsed by Mr Shaw and Mr Hefford, the former pointing out that the bandsmen put a good deal of work into their preparation of works for public presentation and it was considered that the men should be relieved of financial worries. Mr Hefford said the Band had met with a wonderful response a year ago, for which it was very grateful. It had to depend on the grants of the public to keep it going. When the deputation had retired it Avas derided to make a grant of £lO to the Band.
