BOXING.
THE ASHBURTON ASSOCIATION. ARRANGEMENTS FOR TOURNEY. Preliminary bouts to the Downes v. Adams fight next Thursday were arranged at a meeting of the Ashburton Boxing Association last evening. The preliminaries will he: P. Kirwan (Celtic, Christchurch) v. J. Ward (Ashburton) C. Sharp (Celtic) v. P. Connelly (Ashburton and Canterbury fly-weight champion), Fritz Holland (Celtic) v. F. Hill (Ashburton) J. Williams (Celtic) v. J. Wesley (Ashburton), M. Candy (Manawatu) v. Wes Jack (Timaru). Adyice was received that M. Candy (Taranaki welter-weight champion) had arrived from the North Island and had issued a challenge to Ron Withell, Bill Lister or Tom Lister; but in view of the disparity of Candy’s weight with the three named it was decided to match him with Wes Jack, of Timaru, over six two-minute rounds.
It was reported that Barney Downes,accompanied by his trainer, Billy Crawford, of Wellington, had arrived in Ashburton and was in perfect condition for his fight. Mr H. Freeman reported that Adams,, had completed a solid preparation and was also in first-class condition.
