BOXING.
AMATEURS AT TIMARU. ASHBURTON SUCCESSES. One of the most impressive boxers at the South Canterbury Boxing Association’s amateur tournament at last evening was F. Hill (Ashburton), who gave it polished display to boat A. Keene (Timaru) on a technical knockout in the second round. With a good reach, of which he made the most, and fast with both hands and lefts to the head, lie scored cleanly with rights and lefts to the head, putting Keene down for two just before the gong in the first round. Keene was obviously no match for the Ashburton man, and when he came out for the second session he took further punishment. With a telling left and right to the head, Hill sent him down again and the referee stopped the fight. C. Scott (Timaru) and R. Plunket (Ashburton) fought a gory novice lightweight battle which went the full three rounds before Scott won the decision on points. Scott had an advantage in reach but Plunlcet proved himself a glutton for punishment and, in spite of his opponent’s two-fisted attack, fought back pluckily. Both men were bleeding freely from the nose in the last round, with Scott increasing his margin of points. Results of the bouts in which Ashburton boxers took part are as follow :
Middle-weight. F. Hill (Ashburton) 11.6, boat A. Iveeno (Timaru) 11.4, on a technical knock-out. Light-weight. McCandisli (Ashburton) 9.12, beat R. McGrath (Geraldine) 10.2, on a technical knock-out. C. Scott (Timaru) 9.10, beat R. Plunket (Ashburton) 9.6.
