HEALTH CAMP

ACTIVITIES OF ASSOCIATION.

BENEFIT OF THE MOVEMENT.

REPORT TO ANNUAL MEETING

The revenue from sales of Health Stamps reached a record level last year, states the report of the Ashburton Health Camp Association, presented at the annual meeting of the Association this afternoon.

The Mayor (Dt. G. I. Miller) presided and there were also present Mesdamos M. A. Constable, E. M. Begg, W. G. Marshall, A. Brown, Miss Jackson, and Mr C. Ward.

The report continues that the year commenced with a substantial amount in hand and it had been unnecessary to bold the usual street appeal. However, the public responded excellently to the sale of Health Stamps and the appeal for donations and provisions. With reference to revenue for future purposes it was pleasing to note that the Ashburton Harmonica Band bad offered to give a concert during the winter months to raise money for the Association. Messrs Bruce and Co., of Timaru, bad offered to supply biscuits for the next camp, free of cost. During the year Mr Bathurst, • Mrs Minogue, and the secretary (Mrs M. A. Constable) attended meetings of the Central Council in Christchurch. Although the Association was represented thus, it continued to retain full control of all moneys raised in, or allotted to this district. Information had been received from Dr. M. H. Watt (chairman of the Dominion Advisory Board) that four permanent Health Camps were to be established in the Dominion, one of which would be in Canterbury. This matter would probably come forward for discussion later in the year, when arrangements were being made for Health Camps,

The annual canm was held at Staveley from January 5 to January 29, and it was pleasing to record that the conduct of the children had been excellent and that the co-operation of tlie staff had made the camp life most pleasant.. The local ministers of religion had assisted well with Sunday services and entertainments during the i\eek. A visit by the Ashburton Silver Band had been greatly enjoyed by the children and the friends who visited the camp. Mrs M. A. Constable was Camp Commandant and Sister P. Currie the Camp Nurse, with Mrs Mahoney acting as cook. •

It was gratifying to note the gain in weight of the children after their stay in camp. The Association was indebted to the Ashburton County Council for the free transport of equipment, and also to the Ashburton Rotary Club for the transport of the children to the camp.

Sincere appreciation was expressed to all those -who so^. willingly assisted the organisation. “With the completion of another year’s activity wo are able to look back and feel that 25 children have received treatment which will not only improve their health hut inculcate many lessons in regard to physical health and personal conduct which will impress them in after life. We are reminded that ‘he who gives a child a home builds a palace in heaven.’ ” The receipts from the sale of Health Stamps were £32 8s lOd and donations amounted to £l4. Expenditure on equipment was £37 15s Bd. The bal-ance-sheet now showed a credit of £176 4s Bd. The election, of officers resulted: President, Mr E. C. Bathurst; secretary, Mrs M. A Constable ; treasurer, Mr O. Ward; auditor, Mr G. B. Brown; executive, Mesdames Begg and Marshall and Miss Jackson.
