WOMEN’S ESSAY COMPETITION. ON RECENT FAIRTON FIELD DAY. WON BY MRS R, J. BIDDICK. The results of the essay competition conducted by the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company and open to all the 900 Avomen Avho attended, the field day at the Fairfield freezing works on February 14, were announced this afternoon by Mrs F. Curtis, who, as president of the Mid-Canterbury Federation of Women’s Institutes, Avas one of the principal organisers of the function. A large number of entries were received and they Avere judged by Messrs Norton Francis and John Deans, of Christchurch, Avlio reported that the essays had reached a. very high standard, fractional points having to be employed to separate the loading entries. The results AA’ere:—
First prize, of 3 guineas, Mrs R. J. Biddick, Westerfield ’Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, 98 xioints out of 100.
Second prize of 2 guineas, Mrs A. S. Hayman, WilloAvby-Eiffelton Women’s Institute, 97 points. Third prize, Mrs R. S. Watson, Ashburton Women’s Institute, and Mrs R. J. Lattimore, Willowby-Eiffelton Women’s Institute (equal) 964 points, (each aAvarded one guinea). Mrs Watson also sent in a x )oem > which Avas aAvarded a special prize of half a guinea. Miss Joyce Mackenzie, aged 15, Avas awarded a special of half a guinea for essays among school girls. The judges commented on the excellent Avork of this competitor. Thirteen other essays gained 90 points or over, and they Avere very highly commended. The essays AA’ere to have a limit of 1000 words, but many Avere disqualified because the number of words ran to 1200' and oven 1500.
