CLEARING RIVER

A FINAL AGREEMENT SOUGHT. MINISTER TO MAKE VISIT. week. The work has been under consideration for some time. It will be carried out by the Public Works Department under the direction of Mr T. G. Beck, resident Public Works Engineer at Tern uka. The Avork has been discussed betAveen the Government and the Council previously, but no decision has been arrived at, although it Avas agreed that the Public Works Department should do the Avork. At the discussion betAveen the Minister and the Council on Friday next it is hoped to complete the financial arrangements.

Grave concern has been felt in recent years during floods in the river far the safety of low-lying land, particularly toward Tinwald. The control scheme Avill, it is hoped, relieve a great deal of the flood pressure by shortening the channel and clearing tho bed of scrub
