ASHBURTON STOCK MARKET.

PRICES! SHOW SLIGHT DECLINE.

A LARGE YARDING OF SHEER. There was a slight easing in prices at the stock sale in the Ashburton yards to-day, when compared with values ruling at the sale in the Tinwald yards last week. The entry of sheep was large and the quality of average standard. There was a tendency for prices to come down to freezing level.

Top price in the sale up to noon went to Guy Letham (Winchmore), for whom four wethers were sold at 27s Id. Other wethers were sold at from 22s to 2os 4d.

There was a large number of ewes. Top price was realised for six on account of P. J. Mowat (Fairton), these bringing 19s 4d. Not many other sales approached this level. The best ewes sold from 17s to 18s 7d, and lighter lines went down to 13s 4d. Few lambs or cattle were on the market. Sales up to noon were:—

Fat ewes—On account of C'. Brand (Wakanui), 2 at 15s Id; P_. J. Mowat (Fairton), 6at 19s 4d, 6at 18s Id, 6 at 17s 4d, sat 16s 4d, 6at 16s lOd, 5 at 16s 7d, 6 at 17s 4d, 9 at 16s lOd, 12 at 17s 4d; J. Fat lambs—On account of client, 1 at 16s 3d, 2 (hoggets) at 21s lOd. Cattle—Steer, £5 15s; bull, £3 7s 6d.

HIGH COMMISSIONER ’S REPORT

The Department of Agriculture has received the following cablegram from the High Commissioner for New Zealand dated January 21: — Tallow—Market continues, quiet on spot with prices unchanged. Hemp—Manila: Market quiet and easier. Value “K” grade JanuaryMareh shipments £23 15s. Output January 1 to January 17 47,000 bales, against 58,000 bales at the same period last year. Stocks in the United Kingdom December 31 9850 bales, against 6203 at the same time last year. Stocks in Manila January 17 173,000 bales, against 159,000 bales. Sisal: 'Market dull; no business reported. Values nominal on basis of No. 1 JanuaryMarch shipments £lB 10s. New Zealand : Market nominal and unchanged. Stocks in London January 1 27 tons, against 36 tons at the same time last year.
