REPLY TO RUSSIA.
CONSULATE BRANCH CLOSED. ACTION TAKEN BY BRITAIN. (United Press Association—Copyright.) LONDON, January 24. The Moscow correspondent of the “Daily Telegraph” says that as a retort to Russia’s demand for the closure of the British Consulate at Leningrad, Britain has closed the consulate branch at Moscow.
Although hitherto there has been no British Consul at Moscow, visas have been issued and other consular duties, assisting the Soviet but of little interest to the British Government, performed by a section of the Eimbassy. The door-plate was removed from this section yesterday. From now on Soviet officials under orders to. travel to England must go 400 miles to Leningrad to obtain visas. This move the Soviet that the consular parity demanded already exists.
Earlier this month the Soviet Government was reported to have notified representatives of foreign Governments in Moscow of its decision in future to insist on the principle of parity in consular representation. There are at present two British consular posts in Russia, and the Soviet has only one consular representative in Britain. Russia advised Britain that the British Consulate at Leningrad must be closed.
