IN CARNIVAL MOOD.
THE SYDNEY CELEBRATIONS. WELCOME TO NEW ZEALANDERS. (United Press Association—Copyright.) SYDNEY, January 24. New Zealanders arriving to-day for the anniversary celebrations saw the city in real carnival dress, with miles of flags and hunting fluttering from street standards and big buildings. Among the distinguished visitors who arrived to-day were the Governor of Tasmania (Sir Ernest Clark) and Lady Clark. The Governor-General of New Zealand (Viscount Galway), in an interview on liis arrival, said occasions such as the New South Wales anniversary celebrations emphasised the strong bonds which held the Empire together, and added to their strength.
He hoped that when New Zealand was celebrating its centenary, the cardial welcome ■which would be extended to Australians would enable them to reciprocate j as the New Zealanders were doing on this occasion. Lord Galway will visit Canberra and Melbourne. He and Lady Galway were met on their arrival by Lord Ranfurlv, representing the Governor-General (Lord 'Cowrie), Sir Earle Page, and the Deputy-Premier (Mr M. Bruxner). Lord and Lady Galway will stay at Admiralty House with Lord Gowrie'. The New Zealand women cricketers, who arrived by the Wanganella, were warmly welcomed by officials of the Nefe South' Wales Women’s Cricket Association. The players were a little concerned about the Sydney heat, of vdiich they had heard so much, hut the weather to-day, which was bright and cool, after the turbulent storm last Friday and Saturday, completely disarmed them. The whole party is in high spirits. The first match, against New South Wales juniors, is fixed for Thursday. The New Zealand oarsmen went into camp at Nepean River. The New Zealand swimmers visited the Olympic Pool at North Sydney this afternoon, where they were very pleased with the arrangements. “The Sun” says: The New Zealand team of athletes has won the games title for smartness. Their neat attire excelled the representatives of other countries.
FOREIGN WARSHIPS DUE.
FIVE BRITISH FLYING BOATS. (Received This Day, 12.10 p.m.) -SYDNEY, This Day. The cruiser Achilles arrived from Auckland this morning. Warships from four other nations are also due this morning. They are the American cruisers Trenton, Louisville, Memphis and Milwaukee, the Italian cruisers Raimonda and Monte Cuccoli, the Diitch gunboat Flores, the Frenchslcop Rigault de Genouillv. Five Royal Air Force flying-boats will arrive at- Sydney to-day.
