MR W. M. HUGHES
AT VARIANCE WITH COLLEAGUES
GERMAN COLONIES QUESTION. ! REMARK IN ADDRESS TO CLUB, I ? • ... vA *•*/* 1 !•- f . *V -: 1 (United Press Association—Copyright ) (Received This Dav, 9.5 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. The Hon. W. M. Hughes (Minister for External Affairs) is again at variance with the Federal Ministry, arising out of a remark reported to have been made last week in an address at the Legacy Club, when he discussed German colonies. “Many idealists,” he said, “are fond of asserting that if the colonies are restored to Germany there will be world peace, but the most casual examination of world affairs shows that to be an erroneous assumption.” The Prime Minister later expressed a hope that Mr Hughes would refrain from expressing an opinion on so delicate a matter.
It now appears that the German Consul (Dr. Asmis) has asked the Prime Minister whether the views expressed by Mr Hughes represent his own or those of the Federal Ministry of which Mr Hughes is a member.
DISPLEASURE OF GERMANS.
OFFICIAL COMPLAINT LIKELY. (Received This Day, 12.10 p.m.) CANBERRA, This Day. International repercussions may follow Mr Hughes’ speech. It is understood that Dr. Asmis will make an official complaint during the next few days to the Federal Government, on behalf of the German Government.
Mr Hughes said he did not think there was anything in his speech to which the German Government could fairly object. . ... . . ‘
