ENTERTAINMENTS.
St. JAMES THEATRE. “They Gave Him a Gun,” a picture that gives remarkable scope for the work of Spencer Tracy and Franchot Tone, will be shown finally this evening at the St. James Theatre. It is accompanied by a most entertaining supporting programme that includes a Pete Smith oddity. “The Sti-eet Singer’s Return,” the sparkling musical comedy romance, which comes to the St. James Theatre to-morrow afternoon and. evening, and on Wednesday evening, brings together two famous stars of the entertainment world, both owning to the Christian name of Arthur. Arthur Tracy is popularly known to millions, per medium of- his gramophone recordings, as “The Street Singer,” and Ills first film production “Street Singer’s Sei-eixade,” one of the most successful pictures of 1936, also established him among the foremost stars of the screen. Tracy’s delightful rendering of the many song favourites including “The Whistling Waltz” in “■Street Singer’s Serenade” will long remain among the treasured memories of picture patrons and his singing of the equally captivating numbers in his new merry musical comedy romance, will also be received with enthusiasm. The second Arthur is Arthur Riscoe, who also occupies a prominent jjTace in this affections of entertainment lovers the world over.
DANCE FOR SILVER BAND
FUNDS. The Ashburton Silver Band is making every endeavour to raise sufficient money to go to the Dominion contest at Palmerston North, and one of the functions to enable this to be done was a dance in the Orange Hall on Saturday. The dance was highly successful in every way, the attendance being exceptionally large _ and all spending an enjoyable evening. The wants of the dancers were fully catered for by the committee making arrangements, and the function was assisted by members of the hand. The secretary (Mr A. C. Wilson) thanked dancers for their support and referred to further efforts to raise money.
Music was played by Cook’s Orchestra., and extras by Messrs Trevor Brown and Allen Ford. Mr N. Chambers was master of ceremonies. A Monte Carlo was won by Miss Hawke and Mr Crossan, and a lucky spot by Miss Smith and Mr Stephenson.
