FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the “Guardian,” Jan. 22, 1888.) Pupil Teachers.—ln the published report of .the pupil teacners’ examination, which has just appeared, we notice the names of the tollowing within this district who have passed successfully:—First year, William Rees (Tinwald); Matthew Kerr (Hampstead). Second year, Elizabeth Rutherford (Springburn), Alex. Jamieson (Hampstead), Lucy Chapman (Ashburton), Ethelbert Laraman (Rakaia), Ethel Alcorn (Hampstead). Third year, Benjamin Lowe (Ashburton), Annie Meyenburg (Ashburton), li osina Bruce (Ilakaia South). Fourth year, Emma McBean (Ashburton), Isabella Williamson (Ashburton). The Tennis Tournament.—The first - of a series of matches in the lawn tennis tournament came off yesterday in the Domain. The court has been undergoing alterations, very much for the better, by the way, and it was a little after the arranged time, 4 o’clock, that play began. There was quite a good number of spectators, and they took a keen interest in the games, the applause for good strokes beihg impartially bestowed. Fooks and Oliver won, 6-3, 6-3, 6-1.

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO.

(From the “Guardian,” Jan. 22, 1913.)

Deficit on Cricket Match.—The Mayor reported to the Ashburton Domain Board last eveniing that he had granted the Ashburton Cricket Club the use of the Domain free for one of the days during which the match was played against the South Melbourne team. Mr C. W. Nicoll, on whose motion the action was confirmed, said that the Cricket Club had lost about £25 over the match, but found satisfaction in the thought that something had been done to arouse interest in and improve cricket.

Examination Passes.—Among the first hundred candidates who have passed in the junior civil service examinations are the following from Ashburton: Harriet Newport Porter, John Maurice Watters, Jessie Beatrice Hardie. Distribution of Water—A complaint comes from Seafield about the unequal distribution of water in some of the County races. Wilson’s race and Buckley’s race are, it is stated, carrying more than sufficient water, while between these two races there are four races that are quite di-v.
