PERSONAL.

The Minister of Labour (the Hon. H. T. Armstrong) is expected to visit Ashburton on Wednesday, February 3. The Minister will arrive at Timaru from Oaniaru on February 2, and after spending the night at Timaru, will proceed next day to Ashburton, visiting districts en route. Mr Armstrong will pass through Ashburton on Tuesday on his way t<s Dunedin.

The Rev. Angus Mcßean and, Mrs Mcßean left Ashburton to-day to spend a 'week’s holiday at Hanmer.

The Rev. L. A. Day, of Opawa, will take the services at the Ashburton Baptist Church to-morrow.

Mr J. C. McMahon, who has been relieving shift clerk at the Ashburton Railway Station for two months, has been transferred to Christchurch.

The Rev. C. W. Haskell, of Karachi, India, and formerly curate at Ashburton, will take the services at St. Stephen’s Anglican Church to-morrow and the following Sunday.

Messrs L. McNatty, J. Carr, and M. Holland, all members of the Ashburton Defence Rifle Club, will leave for Australia next week to compete in rifle shooting events there. Another member of the club, Mr H. Oromie, left with the Empire Games team on Thurso day.

Mr W. F. Sotham, who has been on the staff of the Bank of New South Wales at Ashburton for 31 years, has 'been notified of his transfer on promotion to the Frankton Junction branch. His place in Ashburton will be taken by Mr R. D. Hoglund, of Winton.

The following Ashburton candidates have passed the Training College Entrance Examination, 1937:—Kathleen Mary Costello, Margaret Williamson Hav, Mary Hart McConnell, Mary Rosann McGuigan, ‘Hugh Montgomery, Esme Maud Ross. The following gained a partial pass: Evelyn Pearl Gibson, William Keith Coatsworth ana Rose Ohisnall.

Appointments of school teachers in the Ashburton County were made by the Canterbury Education Board yesterday as follow: Ashburton, Miss L. J. Robinson (assistant mistress); Lauriston Miss M. A. Christie (assistant mistress) ; LismOre, Mr C. A. Baird (sole teacher, transfer); Mount Somers, Miss K. M. Labatt (assistant mistress): Winslow, Miss I. F. Inder (sole teacher, transfer).
