TRAFFIC CENSUS

SUMMER TALLY IN THE COUNTY TO BEGIN NEXT WEDNESDAY. The staff of the Ashburton County Council will conduct a summer census of traffic in the Ashburton County, for the Main Highways Board, from 6 a.m. on Wednesday next to 6 a.m. on February 5, at nine points in the County. The tally stations will be at Cherisey, Lauriston, Digby’s bridge, Tinwald saleyards, the junction of the Longbeach arid! Main South roads, Hinds township, Rhiigitata bridge, Mayfield township, and Springburn. The stations at 'jjinwald saleyards and Rangitata are continuous, and the checking of the traffic there will go on throughout the day and night. At .the rest of the stations a check will be kept only between the hours of 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. A similar tally was taken in September of last year and the results of this will be used with the summer census.

Each tally clerk will work an eighthour shift. There will be three eiglit-hour shifts daily at the continuous stations, and two at the others. The amount of traffic passing over these points will be recorded under different headings. Tl*ese include private cars, trade motors (classified in four weights), service cars, buses, road plant, light and heavy horsedrawn vehicles, horses, cattle, and sheep. The census will be taken to find present traffic densities, and to form a reading policy with a view to the class of pavements required.'"
