NEW ZEALAND NURSE’S CLAIM.

£IO,OOO AS COMPENSATION.

INJURY IN BOMBING RAID

CHRISTCHURCH, This Day

A claim for £IO,OOO compensation for being wounded during a bombing raid at Shanghai, is being made by Miss Elsie Farrell, a New Zealand nurse. Nurse Farrell, who is a daughter of Mr John Farrell, the well-known theatrical manager, suffered severe facial injuries when a car in which she was riding was destroyed bv a bomb during an air-raid on the Settlement at Shanghai on August 14 last. Miss Farrell, who is at present in Manila, has sent to her father details of her claim, which she has lodged with the British Consul-General in Shanghai. She does not appear to be very optimistic as to the outcome, for in. the accompanying letter, she remarked :j “Of course, if the Chinese pay any-, thing it will be only a small amount.”

In her claim, she says: “I was unable to catch a bus, so 1 proceeded by rickshaw and was finally offered a lift by a car. When we reached the crossing of Yu Ya Ching road and Edward VII road a bomb was dropped. The car in which I travelled was destroyed and the remains of it were all in flames. When I succeeded in escaping from the debris I was bleeding profusely, and I was picked up. by French police and taken to the French I have over the right eye a very bad-looking, painful scar. Over the nose in the height of the eyebrows I have another very bad scar. Five pieces of shrapnel are embedded in the skin of the skull, ar d they cause me constant pain' and many sleepless nights. I lost my position as a result of the accident. There will be expense attached to further treatment, and the disfigurement of my face will remain. Since I am a trained nurse my professional engagements depend to a large extent on my face value. None of the Shanghai physicians will guarantee that there will be no further repercussions so the possibility remains that at some future date I. may bo unable to follow my profession. After due consideration I claim from the responsible party -£IO.OOO-
