THREAT TO ENTER CONCESSION.
FIRM ANSWER BY BRITISH. JAPANESE MODIFY ATTITUDE. (United Press Association —Copyright.) (Received This Day, 10.15 a.m.) SHANGHAI, January 19. A tense incident occurred at Tientsin. On the British authorities refusing to hand over to the Japanese army, a Chinese living in the British Concession, the Japanese threatened to enter the Concession. The British officer replied: “We shall be compelled to resist,” after which the Japanese modified their attitude.
APOLOGY ACCEPTED. EVICTION OF SIGNALLERS. SHANGHAI, Jan. 18. A belated dispatch from Tsingtao discloses that Japanese marines, about to occupy a signal station, drove out two British signallers belonging to the cruiser Dorsetshire, and one from the United States cruiser Marblehead, at the bayonet point. A strong protest evoked a routine apology from ViceAdmiral Toyoda, and the incident is regarded as closed.
