COUNTY CENTRES

LAU RISTON THE WOMEN’S INSTITUTE, In the ,absence of the president (Mrs H. T. Crothers), Mrs W. Gimson presided at the January meeting of the Lauriston Branch of the Women’s Institute. A motion of sympathy with Mrs McIntyre and family, of Dromore, was carried in silence. Many members signified their intention of accepting the invitation of the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company to attend a picnic at the Fairfield, Freezing Works on February 24. The roll call, “Uses of Paper,” brought forward many helpful suggestions.

Competitions resulted as fallows: — Christmas cake: Miss A. Hampton 1, Miss E. Maidens 2, Mrs W. Gimson and Mrs F. Smith (equal) 3. Bloom: Mrs C. Fyfe 1, Mrs Gimson 2, Miss It. Gimson 3. Flowers: Mrs O. Fyfe 1, Miss R. Gimson 2, Mrs W. Gimson 3. The hostesses were Mesdames E. Doak and 07 Fyfe, HIGHBANK THE WOMEN’S INSTITUTE.

The January meeting of the Highbank Women’s Institute was held in the schoolroom, the president, Mrs C. H. Watson, presiding over a good attendance.

A most interesting and instructive demonstration on preparing flowers for show was given by Mrs Clark, of Ashburton, who received a very hearty vote of thanks.

The monthly competitions resulted: Cocoanut Ice, senior: Miss L, Watson 1, Mrs Hyland 2, Miss Gilpin, and Mrs Currie (equal) 3; junior: Miss Betty Currie 1. Bloom, senior: Mrs T. Gilpin 1, Mrs Rouse 2. Flowers, senior: Miss L .Watson 1, Mrs Suckling 2. Mrs C. H. Watson 3; junior: Miss Betty Currie 1. Madeira Cake, senior: Mrs J. Thomson 1, Miss Gilpin 2, ,Mrs Currie and Miss L. Watson (equal) 3j junior: Miss B. Currie 1, Miss B. Paul 2. Christmas Gift, senior: Mrs Paul 1, Mrs Watson 2, Miss L. Watson 3; junior: Miss B. Paid 1. The hostesses were Mesdames E. A. Bland, G. Callaghan, W. K. Wilson, E. L. Vaughan and Miss Carr.
