LOOKING BACK.
FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the “Guardian,” Jan. 19, 1888.) A Remarkable Sky.—There was a very remarkable sky at sunset last evening, the western horizon being of a peculiar sage green hue. What this unusual appearance may betoken we leave to the weather wise. Young Ladies Give Ball.—Un Friday evening a most successful and enjoyable ball was given by the young ladies residing in Lauriston. Dancing began at 9 o’clock, and was kept up with unabated energy until the small hours of the morning. Mr Curtis supplied the music in his usual excellent style. Every praise is Vine to the young ladles for the abundant supply of refreshments provided and for the manner in which the schoolroom was decorated. The Tinwald School.—At the monthly meeting of the Tinwald District School Committee there were present—Messrs J. Caygill (chairman), W. H. Smith, S. Corrigan, M. O’Brien, and W. Robinson. The report of the inspector was received, and was considered satisfactory. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO.
(From the “Guardian,” Jan. 19, 1913.) Comment of Cricket Flayers.—Commenting on Ashburton cricket players after the match against South Melbourne, the captain of the visiting team (Mi 1 G. H. S. Trott) said that the Aslir burton team contained some good players ; they just lacked experience. In C. Armstrong, ' H. Fryer, C. Cusdin, and W. J. Bannehr the County had players, who, if they got the right sort of experience, would develop into very good cricketers. Fryer would soon be a first-class batsman if he were trained under a competent coach. The youngster had done well in the match, and: anything that came his way he had clipped at, and clipped at well too. His weakness was in dealing with the short stuff, but he should soon learn to judge and deal with this better. The speaker concluded with a special vote of thanks to Mr H. J. Chapman and Mr H. Waters for their kindness to himself and their team.
Rakaia Sports Club.—The Rakaia Sports Club is not very well pleased with the financial results of its sports meeting on Boxing Day, and when they came to the squaring of accounts they found that there was a debit balance of £ll, rather a big deficiency for a small club. It has also discovered that an increase in donations did not follow a multiplicity of vice-presidents.
