FINE, BUT COOLER CONDITIONS.

The weather in Ashburton to-day was still fine, but conditions were cooler than previously, although the temperature was quite mild. There was a light southerly wind, which arose yesterday, and, the sky in the morning was fairly heavily overcast, although there was an occasional burst of sunshine. In the afternoon the sky had cleared considerably, and conditions were pleasantly warm. The maximum temperature yesterday was 77.7 degrees and the minimum last night 50.8 degrees. The barometer had risen at 9 o’clock this morning to 30.01 inches from 29.91 inches yesterday morning.

The temperature in Blenheim yesterday reached 95 degrees for the second time in one of the hottest summers on record.

The Government Meteorologist, at noon to-day, issued the following statement regarding the weather:— General inference: A shallow, depression is moving eastward, off the Dominion. An anticyclone is located over the Tasman Sea and extends on to the South Island. The forecast for the east coast of the South Island from Blenheim to Oamaru i« as follows:

Light to moderate south-westerly winds, later becoming variable. Weather for the most part fair, but cloudy at times on the coast, with possibly some light showers or drizzling rain. Temperatures moderate. Seas slight to moderate, but with a considerable southerly swell.
