Mayhew (Liberal) was elected member of the Dominion House of Commons at the by-election for the Victoria seat necessitated by the death of Mr S. F. Tolmie, a, former Provincial Premier of British Columbia. It was a Government gain. The voting resulted: Mayhew 9117 McKelvey (Cons.) 73G7 King Gordon (Com. Fed.) 6277 Mr R. B. Bennett (Leader of the Opposition) personally led the campaign with a charge that the Government had a secret agreement with the United Kingdom to abolish preference pacts to permit a trade treaty with the United States as a world peace gesture. The Government leaders protested that there was no agreement, and guaranteed to protect Canadian interests.
