BY-ELECTION IN CANADA. THE VICTORIAN SEAT WON. ‘jCJnked. Press Association —Copyright.) VICTORIA (8.C.), Nov. 30. R. W. Mayhew (Liberal) was elected member of the Dominion House of Commons at the by-election for the Victoria seat necessitated by the death of Mr S. F. Tolmie, a, former Provincial Premier of British Columbia. It was a Government gain. The voting resulted: Mayhew 9117 McKelvey (Cons.) 73G7 King Gordon (Com. Fed.) 6277 Mr R. B. Bennett (Leader of the Opposition) personally led the campaign with a charge that the Government had a secret agreement with the United Kingdom to abolish preference pacts to permit a trade treaty with the United States as a world peace gesture. The Government leaders protested that there was no agreement, and guaranteed to protect Canadian interests.
