FARMING TOPICS.

FARMERS, MASTER CRAFTSMEN. “The skill of the farmer rather than the fertility of the land is what counts,’’ said the chairman (Mr A. Brisooe-Moore) when the Whangarei Sub-provincial Executive of the Farmers’ Union was discussing the guaranteed price recently. “If the Government put 1000 men on the land and tried to make successful farmers of them within three months, it would he equally as absurd as taking 1000 unemployed and trying to make them doctors or dentists within a similar period. The townsmen should realise that the man on the land is a master craftsman.” Inexpensive Housekeeping. Rip, a dog belonging to Mr Dalton Neville, of Budgewoi, near Wyong, some 60 miles from Sydney, has been taught to control his appetite and feed himself during his master’s visits to Sydney, which often occupy several days. Mr Neville leaves a pa reel of food for each day that he will be away. The dog lias learnt that only one parcel of food must be eaten each day. The number of parcels show him when to expect the return of his master. After eating the last of the food he goes to a spot on the roadside and waits there until Mr Neville comes back. During his absence Rip, who is a cross between a cattle dog and a sheep dog, also minds the cabin and keeps rabbits and other intruders out of the vegetable garden.
