FOREST FIRES.
SERIOUS LOSS OF LIFE. CAUGHT IN RAGING OUTBREAK. (United Press Association —Copyright.) NE WYORK, August 22. A message from Cody (Wyoming) says that 11 civil conservation corps workers are dead, while 40 were burned through being entrapped on a rock ledge while fighting a fire in the Shoshone National Forest, due to the explosion of overheated trees. Five hundred fire-fighters are expected to have the flames under control by the morning. Twenty-two of those injured were admitted to hospital after gruelling stretcher and ambulance trips down from mountains 5000 to 9000 feet high, where the fire broke out. The leader, who was trapped with the group of men, said: “The wind suddenly whipped the flames up to the very tops of the trees and encircled our party faster than we could run. . I herded the men on to a ledge, ordering them to lie prone. Several of the younger men, terrified at the approach of the flames, tore from the grasp of their comrades and ran out over the ledge and perished.” DEATH ROLL REACHES TWELVE. (Received This Day, 12.20 p.m.) NEW YORK, August 23. The dead now total 12, and the injured, 48.
