FOOTBALL.
ASHBURTON RUGBY UNION. MEETING OF THE COMMITTEE. When Mr A. McCormick asked the Management Committee of the Ashburton Rugby Union at its meeting last evening if a member of the Union could “chip’’ a player on the field of play, he suggested the discussion might better be taken in committee. The president (Mr H. R. D. Porter) said he was the member concerned and opposed discussion being taken in committee. The Union decided to discuss the incident in committee. No report was ’made in open meeting. Other members present were Messrs E. iS. Chambers, G. Day, N. Robilliard, A. Doig, A. Thomson, P. Doig and C. Thomas.
A donation of £1 Is wa9 forwarded by Mr F. B. Robilliard, who congratulated the Union on its effort to restore public interest in Rugby in Ashburton. Mr Robilliard was thanked for his donation.
Grants of footballs were made to the Ashburton Borough, Allenton (two each) and Wakanui Schools. The president drew the attention of members to the decision of the New Zealand Rugby Union that interprovincial games be played in 45-min-ute spells with three balls.
It was decided to write to country clubs asking them to endeavour to arrange for first-aid equipment on their grounds.
Messrs D. McDonald (Methven), D. McDonald (Hinds) and C. Thomas wore appointed junior selectors, and Mr A. Thomson third grade sole selector. It was decided to ask the Rakaia Club for a closed day to assist the 'Union’s funds. The Draw for Saturday. The draw with referees for Saturday is as follows: Seniors—Rakaia v.
