THE TAXI STAND.

Sir,—“Labourite’s” letter, with its glaring inconsistencies, makes one suspect that “East Street Shopkeeper” would have been a far more suitable nom de plume. The wail about the 44hour week and labour conditions is quite heartrending, but entirely beside the point. Admittedly the conditions for shopkeepers are more difficult than they were, but the East Street shopkeepers between Burnett and Tancred Streets are not the only ones affected, as “Labourite” implies. Every shopkeeper in Ashburton is similarly affected.

If farmers and others were permitted to park where the taxi stand now is, even “Labourite,” in his dogmatism, could not suggest that they would spend ono penny more in town than they do at present. They might spend more iii .the shops opposite where they parked their cars, which would mean that they would spend less in other parts of the town where they park and spend their money at present. One cannot blame the 13 East Street petitioners for trying to look after Number One—that is only human nature —but it is the Borough Council’s duty to »ee that they do not get away with it. Let “Labourite” answer this question: Why should tho Borough Council movo tho'taxi stand to give more business to 13 shopkeepers at the expense of 50 or 60 other shopkeepers in Ashburton ?

LIVE AND LET LIVE.
