ST. JAMES THEATRE. San Francisco, melting pot of world romance and magnet for the ships of seven seas, is caught at its most colourtill and romantic moment —when the fleet is in—as background for the singing and dancing of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers in their new musical, “Follow the Fleet,” showing at the St James Theatre to-night and on Monday 7 night. When the old town sees the bulldogs of the fleet steaming through the Golden Gate excitement electrifies the air. Love is around every corner; old lies are retold and new promises made to be broken. It is all in “Follow the Fleet” with the big ships bringing in Astaire and Randolph Scott as sailors with different ideas on love, and Miss Rogers and Harriet Hilliard waiting for them. The battle greyhounds carry a cargo of seven Irving Berlin melodies too, and their decks and the gay spots of the Bay City are the scene for live novel dance numbers by the co-starring master of' rhythm. With this picture there is a hqws reel of the fourth Test match at Adelaide. MAJESTIC THEATRE. “Escape From Devil’s Island” is a drama of lost souls doomed to the blistering liell-fiiole of Devil’s Island, where life is cheaper than a smoke, and escape is a madman’s dream! A powerful and ironical drama, showing at the Majestic Theatre to-night and on Monday night, is life in the raw —a desperate battle for lile which no man wanted without love. It tells of the daring escape of two men across sharkfilled seas and death-infested jungle—for a Woman only one could have. It describes with stark and honest vividness the tortured loneliness of the Devil’s Island convicts—a legion of lost souls condemned to a living death. Produced by Columbia, the film features a large cast headed by Victor Jory, Florence Rice and Norman Foster. A second big film on the programme will be “Love On a Bet,” in which the players are led by Gene Raymond, Wendy Barrie and Helen Broderick.
