NEW BARONETCY.
ONE OF NEW YEAR HONOURS.
BELIEVED EX-KING’S WISH. LONDON, February 2. In the announcement of the New Year honours, there was at least one significant echo from the brief reign of Edward VIII. This was the granting of a baronetcy to Mr Percy Malcolm Stewart, formerly Special Areas Commissioner for England and Wales. Mr Stewart’s report on the distressed areas was rejected by 7 the Prime Minister, Mr Baldwin. Edward VIII., shortly before lie abdicated, personally consulted Mr Stewart during bis tour of South Wales.
All other awards indicate why the recipients were honoured. It is significant, however, that- no reason was given for Mr Stewart’s baronetcy). It is understood, however, that he was honoured by King George VI. because bis Majesty believed that King Edward VIII. intended to make the award.
