FRIENDLY SOCIETIES.

THE ASHBURTON COUNCIL. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. The annual meeting of the Ashburton United Friendly Societies Council was held last evening, the president (Bro. J. H. Ward) presiding over an attendance of delegates representing all the affiliated lodges. A vote of condolence with Bro. W. B. Frampton in his, recent bereavement was carried in silence.

The president welcomed Bros. J Brown (H.A.C.B.S) and S. L. Hawke (Druids), who took their seats for the first time.

Notification was received from Court Star, A.0.F., Rakaia, that Bro. J. Meaclem had been appointed its delegate. The president referred to the retirement from the Council of Bro. *»' • Bryant, who has been a member for 15 years and treasurer for four years. He said that Bro. Bryant would; be greatly missed. A motion recording appreciation <T Bro. Bryant’s services, including a term as president, was carried with applause. The statement of accounts for the year showed levies from lodges amounting to £1799 18s 6d. The hospital account for the period amounted to ’£l7BG 16s sd. The management account totalled £54 17s 9d.

The hospital account for the last quarter was £509 Is 2d. The election of officers .resulted: — President, Bro. R, G. Ross (H.A.C.8.5.); vice-president, Bro. G. V. Furby (Druids); treasurer, Bro. H. D. Gunn (M.U.1.0.0.F.); auditors, Bro. R. W. Crowther and C. M. Innes; executive, Bros. R. H. Biggar (M.U.T.0.0.F.), R. W. Crowther (A.0.F.), E. Parkin (U.A.0.D.), H. C. Preston (1.0.0. F.), J. Brown (H.A.C.8.5.), W. J. Brown (1.0. R.), and T. Wakelin (Sons of Temperance). Bro. G. F. Fowke, who has been secretary for seven years, notified that he was unable to accept office again, but offered to continue for another quarter. It was reported that the mem heirship was now 2350, an increase of 124 for the year.

Tho Council carried by acclamation a vote of appreciation of the work oi the retiring president.
