FISH RESEARCH.

A STATE ACTIVITY. TO PREVENT DETERIORATION. i (Per Press Association.) ROTORUA, February 14. The opinion that scientific research was urgently required to maintain New Zealand fisheries, both salt water and flesh, was expressed bo the Minister of Internal Affairs (the Hon. \Y. EParry) in the course of an interview before his departure from Rotorua on Saturday. The Minister mentioned that the Government had decided to make fish research a State activity, and said that the work would be closely prosecuted. He had gone very thoroughly into the position of the country’s fisheries, and he was satisfied that New Zealand jiad exhausted its knowledge of its salt and fresh water fish. As an instance, he had found no set of anglers whose views were alike when asked for their opinions regarding the improvement of fresh-water fishing. Air Parry said he was satisfied that intense research was now necessary to guide the authorities in tho proper development of tho fisheries. The 1‘ ish Research Department was working well and would, he felt sure, be of great value Lo the country. It would be a calamity if Now Zealand’s fishing deteriorated.
