COMMUNISTS FAIL
NOT WANTED BY LABOUR PARTY DECISION OF THE EXECUTIVE. JUDGED ON PAST RECORD. (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Efforts made by the Communist Party to join forces with the Labour Party with a view to establishing something in the nature of a “Popular Front” movement in the Dominion have ended in failure. The national president of the Labour Party (the Rev. Clyde Carr), who arrived from Wellington this morning, stated in an interview that a meeting of the national executive of the Labour Party was held yesterday, when an application from the Communist Party
for affiliation was refused.
Mr Carr said that the Labour Party was not prepared to have anything to do with Communists. It judges them by their past record and had no hesitation in “turning down” the application. ISince the Labour Party had obtained the reins of Government in the Dominion, the Communist, it is understood, has lost a good deal of ground. Some time ago the Communists gained control of the unemployed workers’ movement in Christchurch, but they were unable to fill the various positions on the executive and it is understood they later abandoned their task.
