HIS FIRST JOB.
NEW SOUTH WALES PREMIER. Mr Bertram S. B. Stevens (Premier of New South Wales) was born 47 years ago in Australia of Lancastrian stock. He is one of a family of 12 children of a carpenter, earned his first wages as an organ-blower, and ultimately, after much study, became a. chartered accountant. He tells me a good story concerning the organ-blowing phase, says a. writer in the “Daily Mail,” London. Struck by the already substantial build of “Tubby” Stevens when a schoolboy, a man who was learning to play the organ gave him the position of blower, at 4s 6d m week. The future Premier’s efficiency so impressed his patron that ho taught the boy to play the organ. Mr Stevens had, 18 months of organblowing, a fact he was able to recall to his first employer, when, 20 years later, as Director of Finance, lie met him at ai conference of bankers. He told him, too, that lie had saved all the money he had thus earned.
