ATHLETICS.

SMITH’® FEAT RECALLED. DEFEAT OF ROSEINGRAVE. Just how great an athlete was George Smith of 1905 All Black fame can be gathered from the fact that in 1901 he defeated the noted Irish hurdler M. M. lloseingrave, in a special 120 yards event at the Auckland Domain in 15 3-ssec. This figure was two-fifths, of a second better than the Australasian record held by two New Zealandeis, H. W. Batger and Arthur Holder, and one-fifth outside A. C. Kraenzlein’s world record of 15 2-ssec. Kraenzlein used the straight-leg method of which he was the pioneer, while Smith knew no other style hut the graceful bent-knee, which could not be compared with Kraenzlein’s method. The time never received official recognition, but it was authentic all right. Two timekeepers recorded 15 3-ssec. The third who was so jostled by the excitement that prevailed, could not clock the race.
